BSCO Warns of Scam

Scam AlertThe Bay County Sheriff’s Office issued a Scam Alert this afternoon to inform the public about a spike in activity involving two familiar phone scams in Bay County.

Several complaints have been filed concerning a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS informing the intended victim they owe on back taxes and need to purchase green-dot cards or wire money to pay what is owed. The IRS does not contact anyone to request payment through wired money or green-dot cards.

Another scam in Bay County is one in which the intended victim receives a phone call and is told the Bay County Sheriff’s Office has a warrant for them. The victim is told they need to purchase green-dot cards or wire money in order to pay off the warrant and avoid arrest. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office will never call someone to inform them of a warrant and request money.
