Beware of New Fund Raising Scam

Scam Alert

Scam Alert Following Parkland School Shooting

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert this morning, February 23, 2018. In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, there has been an increase in fraudulent “fundraising” calls soliciting money “to make our kids safer.”

Sheriff Tommy Ford warns citizens to be cautious donating money over the phone to organizations with unfamiliar names making vague promises of using the donations to provide safety for children. In some cases reported to the BCSO, the scammer even knows the correct name of the person he is calling, which made lead some intended victims to believe the caller is legitimate, when he is not.

Emotionally-charged tragedies such as the Parkland shooting are quickly used by scammers to con well-meaning people. Be very wary of those making spontaneous calls asking for money, and give only to trusted organizations you have verified and call yourself to make a monetary gift.
